Port in Los Angeles?

Post by Andrew E Murphy. »

Hi all,

I was wondering where I can buy some vintage port in Los Angeles as I'm travelling there from Australia and our market is extremely limited. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks

Hi Andrew,

What part of LA will you be in? Will you have a car or someone to drive you? I ask as the LA area is a huge geographic area and that will determine where we should recommend you go.

Andy can better explain the geography. But I've bought from:

Some places in West Los Angeles I frequent include the Wine House, Twenty Twenty Wine Merchants & Woodland Hills Wine. The Wine House is huge (I believe that they bill themselves as the largest wine shop on the west coast). The everyday ports are on the main selling floor and the better stuff are in the walk-in wine cellars in the back. They have a good selection and decent pricing. Twenty Twenty is a different story...it is one of the best stocked (mid to high range) shops that you are likely to come across. The wines are in perfect shape, in fact the entire store is kept at 55F & 70% humidity. As might be imagined, this attention to detail doesn't come cheap, the pricing is on the high end and you won't find any "deals". Woodland Hills Wine (which is located in the San Fernando Valley) also has a nice selection of ports. Typically they carry vintage ports back to 1963 (sometimes they also bring in some 55's) and they also have a number if Colheitas on hand. It should be noted that Woodland Hills Wine stores their ports standing up, which of course is not ideal therefore I would approach their wines with a bit of caution, and a through inspection (asking questions about the prior storage conditions would certainly be a good first step).
