42 (Know that's not right but it is the "Answer to The Ultimate Question of Life, the Universe, and Everything".). Lets say by a factor of 3 (*42), or 126.

There are thousands of growers, but I'm going to guess that the number of IVDP-registered producers and shippers is much lower. In keeping with John M's theme, I'll guess 142. [1974_eating_popcorn.gif]

Something must have gone wrong with the mice and the dolphins and the whole universe, because the answer to question (a) is not 42 but rather 43, I believe!!!!

And the answer to (b) is of course 76.

It would be interesting to see if we can get a list from the IVDP with all their names... then we could charter a bus, write FTLOP on it and spend 2 or 3 weeks in Portugal to travel from producer to producer... That would be the best vacation ever... [cheers.gif]

I love that that is the starting reference point for your guess!

Port shippers registered - 85
Port producers who are not also shippers - 17

One person is close and one person nailed part of it.

The person who nailed part of it ... Christian is correct, there are 76 producers in the Douro that are able to bottle and sell their own Port wine.

That being said, that is only part of the total. :munch:

Christian is correct, there are 76 producers in the Douro that are able to bottle and sell their own Port wine.
And, I am told, the IVDP employs no fewer than eight inspectors to monitor them, making constant unannounced visits.

Bureaucratic overkill writ large..!

If they're like employees in many govt institutions, they're probably also doing 3 other jobs as well that were downsized in the last round of budget cuts.
