For The Love Of Port

Anyone know anything about a producer named Moreira?

Is it possible to get a picture of the bottle? I've seen a few different Port and wine made by different Moreira, it is a common name in Portugal. Or is it just branded Moreira Port?

Just saw some '66 (I think) Moreira on winesearcher and was just curious. I'd never heard of them before.

I have had Jorge Moreira to my home, he was a winemaker working for Dirk van der Niepoort a few years ago and now is the winemaker at Quinta de la Rosa along with Sophia Bergqvist whose family owns the company. But at most Jorge is 40 years old, so maybe this '66 was something his family made? Not sure. I do know that Moreira is far more well known for their Colheitas from the 1930s-1960s, so maybe they don't exist anymore. If I was not leaving for NY in two hours I would do some research. I have several bottles of 1997 Moreira VP in my cellar, so someone was at work under that label 10 years ago; a good local shop here in DC, Schneiders, had a bunch of it, and a variety of Moreira colheita's several years ago. I have not tasted any of the colheitas, but they had the 1997 VP open for tasting at the store and while my palate is still relatively inexperienced, offhand I recall it being a bit light - that is, not what I would tend to think of as a port for the long haul - yet quite pleasant enough to drink right then, with a decent amount of fruit that at $19.99/bottle I could see no reason not to let a couple of them marinate in my cellar for a few years to see what happened. And the stenciled bottles look nice....There's a photo on the website of internetwines.com, they list a 1987 VP, too.

Roy, you're mixing up your Jorge's: Jorge Borges worked for Niepoort, Jorge Moreira was with Real Compania Velha (and indeed now works for Qta. de la Rosa). As you probably know, both own vineyards the Pinhão valley as well, where Jorges Borges makes Pintas and Jorge Moreira makes Poeira.

Porto Moreira is owned by the Barros group, IIRC. I have never tasted or even seen one here. Perhaps it is a brand name reserved for the US-market?

Dave, those stenciled bottles you mention are IMHO also suggesting a link with the Barros group.

Actually, both of them came to the USA for the first time for a tasting I held back in 2003. Dirk was coming and requested an invite for both Jorge Moreira and Borges. It was my understanding that Jorge Moreira had also worked for Dirk, but clearly I must be mistaken. On the site there are pictures of both Jorge's at a dinner at my home (actually the evening prior to the 2 Port events) in the 2003 Seattle Port Tasting article.

I think that Jorge Moreira did work with Dirk Niepoort, but not for Niepoort's product. Dirk advise Jorge winemaking. Dirk is also responsible for the distribution of the products under his distribution company.
