Ranking the Pink Ports

Post by Glenn E. »

The recent question about Port to pair with chili, and my suggestion of trying a Pink Port, got me thinking...

I realize that most of us don't think very highly of this category, but that doesn't mean we can't rank it. There are times when it would be very handy to have a quick list of the best Pink Ports. Like Memorial Day weekend, for example, so that you can still have a Port while you're out in the sunshine grilling steaks or barbequing a brisket.

So... which ones are your favorites?

There are only 3 on my list because I don't think I've tried any others...

1. Kopke Rose
1. Quevedo Rose
3. Croft Pink

I like the Kopke and Quevedo equally. They both have some substance, but are still light and fruity and very nice chilled on a warm afternoon. Croft Pink never really worked for me, so I rank it 3rd. I just find it too simple, even for a pink Port.

You actually have to drink it. That is the problem. Not whether I think highly of it or not.

Rosés are now very popular on bar here in Algarve.
On the hot summer, a good glass of rosé port full of ice is great :D

Can't say I've had a Pink/Rose Port in quite a long time, as in I don't remember the last time I had one. But from the past my favorite was the Quevedo.

In terms of which one can be used to clean out a drain most effectively in an emergency, perhaps?

:P

I thought the Kopke and Quevedo were fine. They're pinks so they're not great, but I get the feeling that great isn't really the target with these Ports.

Wasn't fond of the Croft, though. :(

I've only had the Croft, and it was best as a mixer with seltzer, lime, and sprig of mint as I recall. I think that one out over a Port-tonic and the Port straight up.

Yes, using them as a mixer generally works very well. At least when I've had them as mixers that is. Seems that is the push for this type of Port now. At least for a number of producers anyways.

I've only ever had the Croft Pink - it was at an in-store tasting which is just as well since I would never spring for a bottle. I think "rank" is the appropriate term.

For this category, it would be like asking "Which is the least crappy?"
