1980 Borges Vintage Port

Post by simon Lisle »

This was a disaster unknit volatile not as bad as the messias 85 but close lets just say avoid.Ithen drank a Quarles Harris 91 which I can't make my mind up, the Noval I 'd had earlier was ready which was surprisingly forward this one was meaty and in your face but let down quickly by a volatile finish.I bought this and the borges plus the warres cave 87 which were later releases having two capsules in france. But my worst nightmare was having my wife find me in the wines aisle in tescos crying, about the taylors 77 being on the top shelf next to the light what a waste of good port. But I must admit that tesco's 94 vintage at £14 is good quality where are the symingtons supplying this from.

Simon,

I laughed when I read your note about your wife finding you in the aisle of Tesco crying over the Taylors '77 stored upright next to the display lights. I know what you mean.

I'm not sure where the Symingtons sourced the wine for the Tesco 1994 VP. I've drunk the 1995 (sourced from Quarles Harris) on three occasions. One was lovely and the other two were quite badly spoiled. On this basis £42 for one bottle of nice 1995 VP was not good value (although Tesco did take back the two spoiled bottles and give me a refund). I have to confess that I have not yet made my mind up as to the Tesco own label VP.

My guess on the '94 is that if the wine had come from a single shipper's vineyards or lottes then that would have been the name on the label. Since the label only says "Symington Family" then I would presume that it will be a blend of the best unused lottes from across at least two shippers' wines.
