R.L. Buller & Son - Victoria Tawny port

Post by Roy Hersh »

It has the appearance of prune juice and a price point that anybody can afford. The Buller family is well-acquainted with producing enjoyable fortified wines at a variety of price points and this entry level bottling is worthy of note. This port-style of wine is not only reasonably priced, but it tastes good too. There was an aged smoky Amarone nuance on the nose along with golden raisins and a touch of VA. It was light to medium bodied but fairly smooth on the palate with Kirsch, dried apricots and dates. Sweet but not cloying with enough acidity to provide the balance. The finish is short and possesses a bit of alcohol. Nobody will confuse this with a Portuguese Tawny Port, but given the price it is certainly worth trying. 85 points (11-21-06)
Ambition driven by passion, rather than money, is as strong an elixir as is Port. http://www.fortheloveofport.com
