n/v Croft Platinum Reserve Port

Post by Derek T. »

I bought this today at Sainsbury for £4 (<$8 ) per bottle  - available at this price until 2nd Dec and then back up to £11.

I do not intend giving a tasting note for this port. What I will say is that is is the best QPR port I have purchased this year. As some of you know I quite enjoy a glass or two of port in the evening before bed. I am not lucky or rich enough to have a VP every day so I buy LBV's and Reserve's to fill the space between "real" port experiences.

I bought 6 bottles of this today. I am going back tomorrow for 2 or 3 cases - enough said

Derek,
Thanks for the note. I drink port the same way and I am always looking for those " bridge ports". I have 300 bottles currently of VP, if I drank one a day it would be gone in a year!

So I look for those sale bin specials. I consider the LBV's and NV's to be real port experiences.

Derek, I agree tha tthis Port is more than drinkable. I bought it before the 25% off and it was very good for £5.49. At just over £4.5 it's ludicrous. Errmmm... yeah, I'll go and get some more.
I'm telling you - Port is from Portugal.

Thanks for the hot tip. I picked up:

2 x Graham Crusted 2000 at £7.50 each

2 x Quinta do Crasto '96 at £15 each

2 x Guimaraens '87 at £15 each.

I would have bought more of the Guimaraens but I just bought 24 bottles at auction. I wouldn't worry too much about the 'top shelf' factor if you go to a large Sainsburys - believe me, these guys have sharp stock control now and a fast turnover and are unlikely to let something fester on valuable shelf space for more than a few weeks. Your local corner shop may be a different story...

My intuition says the Graham will turn out to be the best bargain. Thanks for the heads up.

Right - I've just been paid. Sod the Christmas presents I'm going back to Sainsbury's and Tesco.

I had one of those embarrasing "laugh out loud in the office" moments when I read Alex K's last posting.

Richard - the perfect solution for your wine storage problems is .... drink more slowly! If you drink one bottle every two days then your 300 bottles will last nearly 2 years. :D

Derek - I look forward to reading in 10 years time a tasting note on one of the Croft Platinum Reserve bottles that has been lying down in a darkened room since you bought it. You now have a great chance to be the first person on the forum to be able to post a TN for a Ruby port once a year for 10 years so that we can see how it changes.

Alex,

I will gladly keep one of these for 10 years so that we can use it to rinse the decanter before we open your NN63 at the 10th Anniversary Port-n-Spa Offline 8)
