Just bought my most expensive Madeira ever-has anyone ever tasted it or know anything about it?

Well although 1870 was prolific for Madeira, I'd love to see photos that show this is really a Taylor-Fladgate bottling, as to the best of my knowledge, they were never involved in the Madeira trade, unlike the Symington family (involved from 1989-2011).

I've had several Madeira from 1870 and enjoyed them all very much.

Yeah, I've heard the "stories" of this bottling ... but I have never seen a photo providing evidence of its actual existence. I need to see this one. [shok.gif]

I found via Google the original auction of my bottle-see Spectrum Wine Auctions 12/2/11-it has a picture.

I couldn't get the 360 degree view to work for this lot. (It has worked for my on current auctions.) But here's a link to a higher resolution photo:

The Taylor Fladgate Malvasia 1915 and Bual 1897 that I mentioned in the post referenced by Andy were for sale at auction. I believe it was a Zachy´s sale but I am not sure. Perhaps Justin A. remembers more clearly.

I cant say I recall. I remember maybe 8 months ago a Taylor-Fladgate bottling at a Zachys sale though. Cant remember what it was though.

Great to FINALLY see a real photo of this. The only thing missing of course, is any clue as to when it was bottled. LOVE the label. Thanks!

Going to repost this on FB too. I don't know how many Port lovers have ever seen a Taylor-Fladgate Madeira before.

The possible answer to that can be found at the "WineLovers Discussion Group" of 2/24/14-Charles Weiss said"The D'Oliveira family sold a

few hundred liters to-MWA"-?bottled after the 1984 sale? See the MWG for 1870 S TF Sercial.

From the photo, the bottle volume is in imperial units so it has to be bottled before 1979. I don't see evidence of a selo either.

In looking at a high res. picture of it the top appears to be a separate piece than the neck. The glass also appears to be very wavy and not smooth like modern bottles. The fill level also appears to be lower than the top line, indicating it's been standing up for a long time and some evaporation has occurred.

The Mass-I-138 import number appears the "I" is what may designate the import company back then. As 138 seems to be the law-Code that governs alcohol license. Though that is based on current Mass. laws so not sure how that may have translated back then. But stuff like the codes themselves don't change much. Disclaimer: I've not been able to locate how exactly to translate that import number, so this is just speculation.

I would suspect it was bottled a very long time ago.

I was told that my bottle fill is not as shown(it must have been stored upsidedown) there is a sediment plug

at the top.
