For The Love Of Port

I believe this company is part of the Symington group of Madeira's, but I have never seen anything written about this 10 year Malmsey. Can anyone give any info on this Madeira?

Madeira Wine Company has a few labels for their non-vintage wines: Blandy's, Leacock, Cossart Gordon and Miles. I feel it is more at random which label they use when they release them ( only guessing ) . They are found all over in supermarkets and wine-shops.

Vintage wines only use three labels: Blandy's, Cossart Gordon and Leacock's, not Miles.

Their vintage wines are often bought "secondhand". F.ex. I bought 1910 AO-SM Sercial at their lodge in 1986. It is ex- D'Oliveiras wine. Later they repainted the bottle to Cossart Gordon, and lastly they repainted it again and sold the last bottles as Blandy's in about 2003.

I bought Leacock 1954 Verdelho. I looked at the IVM label's number and letter, and found almost the same letter and number in their vintage room at their lodge. They have shelf upon shelf of vintage wines there. BUT there it was under the CVM label, not repainted yet. I tried to buy one with CVM on. They callled their bosses, and of course the answer was NO ... They are still there last October with CVM, not Leacock, painted on.

They had a 1958 Bual Cossart Gordon bottled some times ago. Sold out a couple of years ago. Now the same wine has been bottled about 10 years later again from cask. Now it is called 1958 Blandy's Bual !! Supposed to be better now after longer time in cask.

Thanks for the information. I was able to get 3 of these for a paltry $8.50 each (750ml) at auction tonight.

I found one of the Miles 10-year malmsey or bual 4-5 years ago. As I remember, it was a little sweet with no complexity. Any of the other 10-year madeiras that I have had is better. But, for $8.50, I would buy it again. Please give us a report.

I opened this 2 days ago and tonight I got around to giving it a proper TN.

Color is a dark walnut with a touch of red in it. Nose has a touch of VA, but much less than any other Madeira I've had (which is not many). There is also flavors of carmelized nuts and a touch of spice. This Malmsey is definitly on the sweeter side of things and you can taste a touch of unintegrated residual sugar (or so it seems). That gives way to flavors of carmel, nut, and a touch of oak. The palate is rather simple but pleasant none the less. THe finish is also rather simple, but gives me a nice sharp kick, but in a good way, of spice. The finish last a rather long time for this decent QPR bottle. My overall impression is of a decent everyday quaffer. 82 points
