need info on old bottle of port

I was wondering if anyone knows anything about a bottle of wine I bought about 4 years ago. I know nothing about vintage wines but the bottle and lable look to be pretty old, I would say maybe 1950-1960. could be older. It is a plain lable that reads..."Port (produce of Portugal) Shipped by permission of His Majesty's Government for the use of the Officers Messes of the United States Army". The cork has never been removed. I was just wondering if anyone knows anything about this wine as I have looked for something similar but have never found anything close, I would appreciate any info anyone might have.

Welcome to the forum - but can you edit your profile so we know your real name and where you hail from - no-one has anything to hide here!

With regard to your bottle, it is probably a basic ruby port, and probably of no great interest as a drinking prospect - but as an historical item it is interesting and collectible.

My guess is that this was a bottle shipped to the UK during WWII or shortly after - so mid 1940's

Dave,

If you could post a picture (or link to a pic) it may be helpful.

Thanks

Dave,

Thanks for the pics. Unfortunitly I can't help on this one, but maybe Roy or someone else can forward this to some people in the trade to find out some info on it. It is a rather plain label, to say the least, and has sparked my interest on a historical level.

I hope someone can find something out about it.
