I am a Madeira fan and have the opportunity to enjoy it regularly. My tasting notes are short and criptic, but attached is anyone cares to look. I'm always interested in alternative experiences.

Hi Stephen,

Nice to have you join us here at FTLOP. It would be great if you'd give us a bit more of an introduction as your depth of Madeira accumen shines brightly. What provides you the opportunity to taste Madeira regularly? Are you in the wine business or just a serious Madeira freak like many of us here?

Anyway, thank you so much for such a fabulous listing of old tasting notes. I have been fortunate that within the past 2 weeks, I have consumed 50 old and ancient Vintage Madeiras as I had made this one of my New Years "wine resolutions" for 2007, in addition to a great trip to Madeira in May. After I finish off with the 2006 Harvest Tour articles (a 3 part series) I will do a 3 part series of articles on the just finished 3 tastings I was fortunate enough to partake in. Had you joined the Forum even a month earlier I would have made sure you were invited to the East coast tasting.

I look forward to reading more about your Madeira passion. Again, welcome aboard and enjoy yourself here. By the way, do you drink any Port?

That's quite a lineup, Stephen. I am almost crying when I see the prices you paid for these wine. Ahhh... the good old days...

Roy,
I'm simply a Madeira afficianado. I started with a bottle of 1907 Blandy Bual in 1990, and was hooked. Almost all of the above were from my cellar. Most were bought from Mannie Berk, but in the early to mid-1990's I purchased some old MWA wines around the USA, from a few collections, and at auction. In addition, Patrick Grubb has been the source of 6-7 cases, including some of the exotica. In addition to bottles here and there, I run a couple of social wine groups. At one for couples, I usually serve four Madeiras, with a theme, once a year. Last year's theme was Malmseys 1900-1901. This year the theme continues with Malmseys 1901-1906. My other group, generally known as "Guys Night Out", has a Madeira dinner every January. A local chef, Todd Gray at Equinox, has mastered the art of preparing full meals to match Madeiras of varying sweetness. Usually cost constraints limit the wines a little, but my purchases in the old days help keep costs down. This weeks dinner wines were as follows: RWC Charleston Sercial, 1978 Barbeito Sercial, 1862 D'Oliveira Verdelho (just a little left over from a prior tasting), 1929 Barbeito Verdelho, 1912 D'Oliveira Verdelho, Henriques & Henriques Boal Velho (circa 1870), 1869 Blandy Bual, 1886 Barbeito Malvazia (Afonso), 1885 Barbeito Malvazia (Afonso). If you would like to join next year's GNO, please come and be my guest. Oh yes, I do enjoy Port, but spend most of my fortified wine shekles on Madeira. I look forward to your upcoming Madeira tasting notes.
Keep up the great work.

Steve! I hope you don't mind me saying so, but you are one lucky b*****d! I love Madeira - my passion for old Madeira surpasses even that of my passion for Musar, but, alas, I just don't have access to it. Thanks so much for the notes. I am green with envy at what you have tasted, but thankful also for even getting a glimpse into these wines.
