For The Love Of Port

I have had limited exposure to the Ports and Douro wines of this producer having only visited them once for a brief tasting quite awhile back. I'd very much appreciate your insights into their wood and bottle aged Ports and anything you can share about their table wines, thank you. If anyone has visited them in Gaia or the Douro ... I'd especially be interested in your impressions!

Poças is widely available here in Quebec and at reasonnable price : half the money asked for big names.

3-4 years ago I was really impressed with their 2000 VP. It was showing very nice fruit and good tannic backbone.

Following that I decided to try more, so I bought the 91 colheita and the 95 VP. Well both where excellent! The VP was showing smooth tannins with bold black cherries jam flavours, probably the most enjoyable 95 I had behind Taylor's Vargellas. The 91 Colheita was showing complex flavours of grilled nuts and candied figs, long finale, all balance.

It is one of the company I wish to visit and know more about as so many others. It is just that I wanted to visit companies like Fonseca, Taylor, Niepoort before this one, but I plan to visit it in a near future as I will probably go back to Portugal again and again :)

I've tried a few of their Ports also and was pretty impressed also. Rubies and LBVs aren't usually Ports that I am terribly fond of (sorry Roy!), but Pocas's were genuinely nice. The 10 YO Tawny was a very likable wine and the VP 2003 Director's Choice was genuinely lovable. Ergo, my thoughts from the (all too few) that I've tried is that they seem to be a very respectable producer yet not quite so exciting as some other names.

Can't say I've ever had a Pocas. However, I found some at a store near me, so i plan on getting the '82 Colheita, 10 year tawny, and maybe the 1996 or 1999 LBV.

I'll let you know how they are.

I am a fan of Porto Pocas Ports - imo allways QPR-champs. The LBV 1999 ist a very budged-friendly and good quality LBV. Revista de Vinhos gave 17,5/20 points. For the opulent and great Porto Pocas VP 2000 are already TNs on this board. I enjoyed very much the Porto Pocas 1989 Colheita, a classy wine, full of freshness. This Colheita scores much better for me than the 10 years old Tawny (which I also like). It’s a mistery to me, that there are no TNs on the web for this fabulous wine. I like a lot the Porto Pocas Vintage Port Director's Choice 2003 , (rated "second division" by Jancis Robinson.!) For to stock, I will rather think in cases than in bottles.

I had the Pocas 10 year and the 1982 Colheita last night. I already posted a note on the 10 yr, and I was not impressed by it. As for the '82, better and I will post a TN on it later today.

Roy, I noticed on portlover.com, that you enjoyed last year the Pocas Colheita 1988 (95/91 points). I would be interested if you also tasted the Pocas 1989 Colheita and in your opinion.
