Finally got my official Port glasses!

Post by Doug Zdanivsky »

I got my Ohm Port glasses today..

http://www.ohmdesign.com/newsletter/index001.html

(mid page)

Roy reccomended them, so..

I had no idea they were so tiny..

From the images on the Reidel website I thought it would be roughly the same size as a Bordeaux glass, if not bigger..

Why so small? Isn't bigger better in this case?

Anyways, the circle is now complete.

I have my Port (Dow '83, and Smith-Woodhouse '94 LBV), I have my glasses..

I just can't %$#@*! drink it!!

My wife can't partake for another, well who knows? And on top of that I'm working 12-hour days 20 days in a row now because of our annual shut-down at the mill..

I guess I could open it before I go to work and drink it when I get home..

But A) I want to check out the changes that decanting induces every couple hours..

And B) that would be a whole bottle of Port I'd be drinking that night, and then getting up at 5 AM to go to work..

:(

Hey I fully understand your work situation, I just made two full 24hrs shift in the last 3 weeks to release the worst managed project I've worked in, it just sucks.

For your ports, if you absolutely want to taste them, consider spitting some. You'll save the pleasure and you'll be able to work the next morning.

For the glass that's true that they are a bit small. Tiny glass are not appropriate for port but too large glass neither. In the latter case, too much alcool will be able to evaporate on the surface and will be more noticeable on the nose.

I've made some test myself with a LBV and 5 glasses including the omh design and the Spiegelau Expert glass came out first. The "Revue des vins de France" conduct also some test on many glasses and 4 type of wines, the Spiegelau was awarded the most consistent glass for every type of wine.

Additional Pictures on the official Port Wine Glass may be found at Webshots.Com. Click here to see it

In 2003 I posted 17 Pictures of the Port Glass available online at this Webshots site. A curiosity is that statistics show that since 2003 and until today (September 27, 2005) those 17 Photos have been viewed 1640 times and got a total of 109 downloads !!!!
It's nice to see that the Port Glass gets such attention from Internet users.

Good pics, Mario..

It'd be good if there were side-by-sides of the Port glass, and a Bordeaux glass, for example..

Give it a sense of scale..

I know I had no idea Port glasses were so small, in comparison..

Hi Doug,

I feel your pain with your work schedule. I just finished off a project where I was working from 8 a.m. to 2 a.m. for the past 3 weeks without a day off. That came after 3 weeks of set up and now comes the paper work. Enough of my complaints though. :D

The Ohm glasses are no smaller than the typical Riedel or Spieglau Port glasses available. Yes they are smaller than Bordeaux and Burgundy glasses but there are many good reasons for this.

If I were in your shoes, I would wait to drink the Port you now own ... once you finish your project and can fully watch the Port evolve and appreciate it even more, after your hard work has ended. You can always buy more to share with your wife!

Done and done, finally! :)

Exept the enjoying it with my wife part..

She's unable to drink spirits with the medication she's taking right now..

Let's just say I'm not a very patient guy, and it was all I could do to wait until that 20 day gauntlet finally was at an end..

So I had the whole bottle to myself..

She wasn't too happy with me..

Yeah, I remember when my wife was pregnant and each time I'd open a great old bottle of VP, I got a lot of grief. It goes with the territory.
