A Quiet Friday evening...

Post by Alan C. »

My better half has retired early, I've decided to stay in. I'm searching the site, but as good as it is generally, its quiet. I'm opening a bottle of Grahams 'The Tawny' Port. Wish I could taste 'the whiff of roasted hazel nuts with a hint of vanilla cream!'. But I cant. It just tastes very good! Anway, while I'm searching for more Port education, here's a tale,

Barry returned from a doctor's visit one day and told his wife
Carolyn that the doctor said he only had 24hours to live.
Wiping away her tears, he asked her to make love with him. Of
course she agreed and they made passionate love.
Six hours later, Barry went to her again, and said, "Honey, now I
only have 18 hours left to live. Maybe we could make love again?"
Carolyn agreed and again they made love.
Later, Barry was getting into bed when he realized he now had
only eight hours of life left. He touched Carolyn's shoulder and said,
"Honey? Please? Just one more time before I die." She agreed, then
afterward she rolled over and fell asleep. Barry, however,
heard the clock ticking in his head, and he tossed and
turned until he was down to only four more hours.
He tapped his wife on the shoulder to wake her up.
"Honey, I only have four hours left! Could we...?" His wife sat
up abruptly, turned to him and said, "Listen Barry, I'm not being
funny....but I have to get up in the morning and you don't."

If my humour is not to your taste, I apologise, but tell me a port fact or an interesting recollection, and it'll keep me quiet.

Cheers, Alan.

I had tonight scheduled to go to a fantastic tasting of Pegau CdPs at a fine restaurant downtown in Seattle for ages. The fact that Laurence was going to be there in person made it even more palateable given the high ticket price for dinner.

A few daze ago, my wife comes up to me and lets me know that she forgot to tell me, but her best friend scored her a great ticket to some dumb over the hill rocker she liked in HS and there was no way she could possibly miss this. Now get this, it is not here in Seattle, but in Portland Oregon which is 200 miles away from here (where her friend lives) and that she will be spending the night there.

Of course, in my head, all I could picture was missing the chance to hang with Laurence F. and suck down some very fine CdPs. Knowing that I owe her a bazillion "wife points" for all my wine travels, local dinners and numerous tasting group events ... it turned out that this droog looked at her with sad puppy eyes and said, "honey you go and have a great time." She was so happy (this was just on Wed. (Valentine's Day no less!). I knew I was totally marooned.

On Thursday after a loving evening the night before, I am on the phone like crazy calling every babysitter we've ever used and emailing friends. Nothing! I figured what is one night out while he wife is away? But it was all for naught as I never did find a babysitter and they are probably up to the de Capo right now as I sit here and work on the final facets of the next eNewsletter.

Melancholy man, without a glass of Port in hand. Ah, but I have a brilliant way to cut the funk. Time to come up with a Port brainteaser.

Roy,

I can't believe you think anyone will show sympathy with your plight

Your poor wife has suffered years of being a port widow and on the one night she arranges a girls night out you complain about being stuck with the babysitting duty and missing out on a meal. You poor man

Knowing how many port tastings and meals you attend in a year I struggle to do anything other than sit back and admire the skill with which your good wife pulled this one off. Asking you on Valentines Day was no coincidence, my friend - you had no choice but to agree, and she knew that before asking the question - you were slam dunked, and probably deserved it

Well played Mrs Hersh

......and remember to get your retaliation in first next year Roy :P

Brilliant.

I am laughing my arse off. Thanx Derek.

Dorene is a saint, there is no question. However, I attend far more non-Port related wine events than ones centered around Port. At least 30-40 a year. So with Port on top of all of those, who am I to whine?
