Alan's Offley '63

Alan,

Some questions for you to help pass the time as you sit and watch your Port settle - kind of like watching paint dry but waay more interesting for a porthead.

1) How long are you going to give the Port to settle and recover from the trauma of being mishandled by the Royal Mail? I ask as I'm curious to compare it with ports that I buy for "immediate" consumption and then don't get round to opening for a couple of weeks or even a couple of months. They tend to stand upright in the garage (which is cooler than the house) while waiting to be opened.

2) Is the wine labelled "Offley Vintage Port 1963" or "Offley Boa Vista Vintage Port 1963"? The reason behind this question is that when I was reading about the Offley Forrester Port House I discovered that while their main quinta is called Boa Vista, in some vintages the Offley house also shipped a vintage port made from grapes that they bought in from other farmers or sourced from other quintas. I have seen bottles of the "Offley Boa Vista" from 1963 but have never seen a straight Offley, hence I'm curious to know which of these you have in front of you.

3) What kind of glass is the port bottled in? Is it dark and opaque or paler and something you can see through? No reason for this question other than idle curiosity.

That's all for now. I'll post more later so that you don't get tempted to open the bottle prematurely.

Alex,

Purely on Dereks advice I'm giving it TWO whole weeks. So while this bottle winks at me I'm trying all these dodgey LBV's.
The wine is labeled 'Boa Vista', and has that white dot, I know understand. The bottle is exactly like this

The bottle is the dark, opaque version, so it can hide all its secrets!
It looks delightfully dusty and deshevelled, just how you'd want a 44year old bottle to look.

Oh well, good things come.....

Not as bad as some later bottles - if you hold it up to the light, you can just see the level.
