1966 Sandeman Vintage Port -- PORT SEASON IS OFFICIALLY OPEN

1966 Sandeman Vintage Port - decanted 4 hours. Offers a brick red color with some tawny showing on the rim that fades to a pink hue. Aromatics are lovely and along with rose petals, I sense antique mahogany, toffee and chestnuts. This is a delicate wine that is best on the first day. It gained some alcohol the second day as I wanted to see if it would become richer, which it did not. I have many bottles of this wine from a number of bottling sources, which always makes comparison more difficult. The flavors were delicious with mostly sweet prune and currants that were prominent, but also some caramel and pralines. The finish was long but there was a touch of alcohol there as well. This is a wine (or a bottle at least) that is now fully mature, and showing tertiary nuances. It is elegant and mostly enjoyable. 90 pts.

When did Port season close?
Thanks for the TN; the only time I tasted the Sandeman '66 it turned out to be a defective bottle: vinegar - what a shame!

Thanks for the notes , Roy. I acquired a couple of bottles of this from someplace last year. I think it was from Rare Wine. I was curious as to how it was doing.

Rich,
I have had better bottles of this wine. It was actually probably 2 pts. better the first day, but I did the TN while sipping the Port the 2nd day ... a rarity for me.

Thanks for the TN Roy. Only tasted it once - it was the same bottle that Stevie tasted - a rather bad example. Maybe it's worth giving it another shot.

Maybe one of these trips, you gents from the Netherlands ... join Mario and me on our Port tour and I will bring some "special selection" along for the ride.
It would be great to meet you guys. I'd love to get over there someday, but that probably won't be in the near future. The good news is, that if our trips become popular and keep my coming to Europe ... I will do some exploration of the countries in which FTLOP members live and meet up for offlines. I do a lot of that type of travel within the USA.
