For The Love Of Port

It's St Georges Day. Now, I'm all for having a gallon of Guinness on St Patricks; Haggis, neaps and tatties with a dram on Burn's Night; even a daffodil and leek bake on St David's (but I refuse to drink Brain's).

Today, I will make a Steak and Kidney pie, obviously with a bit of Port in it. I have some Timothy Taylor Landlord, Shepherd Neame Bishop's Finger and, of course, some Newcastle Brown. However, I think that I should also be looking at a Port, as that is as traditionally English as Fish and Chips, Balti Chicken and Lasagne.

As the tasting this month is 1987, I'll probably pop the half of Bomfim.

What are the rest of you doing?

Wondering where the Empire went and how we let it slip......

I'm waiting avidly for the port producers to announce which wines they will be releasing from the 2005 vintage.

Actually, I forgot it was St George's Day today until I saw the front page of the Daily Sport. The Cross of St George that was being worn on the front cover served to remind me of the date.

I shall probably celebrate the day by opening a bottle of port. That's what I do to celebrate most Saint's Days (aren't most days dedicated to one Saint or another?)

For those who don't know, the Daily Sport is a poor man's Playboy. It's a newspaper with 1 page of sport at the back and 30 or 40 pages of semi naked women and porn ads. Without seeing today's edition I am willing to bet that the flag Alex refers to is painted across a rather enormous pair of unclad breasts - 8)

I'm sure that, like me, those who know Alex are wondering why he buys this particular publication. Perhaps they have a good wine column?

Steak and kidney pie was great, I must have used at least a third of a bottle of Warre's Heritage Port in it. Dow's Quinta do Bomfim not so great but still drinking it so it can't be that bad. Timothy Taylor Landlord good; slightly over-cooked chocolate souffle, not so good. Terry's Chocolate Orange, well, it's Terry's Chocolate Orange.

And I might add that it is also the birthday of the Noble Bard - William Shakespeare. Coincidentally, he also died on April 23rd.

Oh yeah, my birthday as well - I try to keep good company when I can!

I protest (again). I don't read the Sport, I just saw the flag of St George on the front page and realised that it must be St George's Day.

And I do know who Tove Jansson is. She is the Finnish born, Swedish speaking author most famously known for the Moomin books (as in Comet in Moominland). But she wasn't born on St George's Day.
