For The Love Of Port

Okay... I almost suspect I starting to have a problem here :help:

Am I the only one who has ever drained an entire bottle of port by themselves in one sitting... in this case, being the night where I finally had a chance to sit down and read the entire FTLOP newletter? I feel a bit weird, having emptied an entire (750 mL) bottle of Dow's 1997 LBV. It was good, but given the state of fatigue, and admittedly, drunkenness, I am in, do NOT expect a proper TN from me. Correct grammar in this post seems to be a bit of a struggle at this point.

Someone tell me I am not alone in this

So a 750 by one's self is nothing to be ashamed of as long as you were not driving. In the old days, there were "3 bottle men" so called in the UK because they were able to consume 3 bottles of Port (who knows what kind, but I guarantee it was YOUNG!) which is most impressive!

On the harvest trip, everyone drank at least a bottle of Port every day of the trip ... for better or worse!

I have to say that Derek, Stewart and Andy were most impressive in this regard! No disrespect for the others who also consumed copious quantities of all types of Port!

There is a technical term for this:

It's called 'Doing a Derek'

Alcohol-wise it's only the equivalent of six pints of ale, which is a pretty average evening's intake for seasoned pub-goers (here, anyway...)

And on the Trip, I think it was more like 2-3 bottles in total by the end of the day....opps, that was Derek and I in the hotel lobby at night after everyone else went to bed

There are 15 units of alcohol in a 750ml bottle of Port, which is 7.5 pints of session ale or 3 litres (just over 5 pints) of premium beer. I can guarantee that all of the UK guys could manage this. In fact at the Brum off-line we killed the equivalent of two bottles each plus beer and dinner wine.

You very much amongst friends here. There is not a single person that I have met from FTLOP who is not capable of and regularly achieve's this feat.

I find the key to limiting the suffering that can follow such an event is to watch what else you drink in the same session. KillerB gave a brief description of our recent FTLOP UK Offline. We started on the beer (between 3 and 6 bottles depending on when each participant arrived), half a bottle of red each, 2 bottles of port each and everyone was doing fine. KillerB then handed out some pink fizzy stuff and it all went horribly wrong from there. So, the lesson is - don't drink pink fizzy stuff

PS: I don't like drinking a whole bottle of young port, it becomes too dry and sticky to enjoy after a few glasses. Something like Warre's 1970 is just perfect for those whole bottle nights but tonight I will probably be doing it with a Smith Woodhouse 1983 8)

In my youth I agreed to a drinking competition, done with whisky, with an academic friend some six years older than me. Between agreeing and the competition I was warned by several people who had seen him, at a college feast, after ranting about how nobody drank anymore, then neck, in one, a so-far untouched decanter of port.

I lost that drinking competition (though he had trouble getting home).

There is no shame in taking a whole evening to drink a bottle of port.

Kudos to Julian for his sardonic point that taking an entire night to kill the bottle is nothing to be ashamed of.

Being an athletic wannabe, drinking this type of volume is usually a big no-no. However, I have been injured and unable to pursue my running and cycling nonsensical fantasies... as such have turned to an extra intake of port to make the fact that I am turning soft around the middle more bearable

I am grumpy becauseI cannot workout without considerable pain... I suspect I will be grumpier yet when the injury passes and it is time to "dry out."
