Is it possible to know what a bottle is (house and year), starting with just the number on the label (646298)? Does the IVDP keep tabs on these things?

Yes it is possible to obtain the name of the shipper & the vintage from the IVDP number. I had a question about a particular bottle a year or so ago and was able to determine the the above information fairly easily just from the IVDP number.

Is there a published algorithm and dataset, or does one (somehow) submit the number to the IVDP? Number = 646298.

I understand that the IVDP will, on occassion, give you this information but they will not give out the secret code for obvious reasons

Looks like Warre's LBV to me.

The number is incomplete. If all it came down to was a six-digit number then there would be a limit of 999,999 bottles. There are two letters above and two digits below. The two digits look like 02 and the first letter appears to be a 'Y'.

Just a quick calculation shows that the number of references possible is 67,600,000,000, which is enough for 11 bottles for every person on Earth. I suspect that everybody here has had more than their fair share.

Actually I emailed the IVDP concerning an older bottle I had in my cellar. The President of the IDVP emailed me back with information on the shipper & vintage. I wasn't expecting the head of the IVDP to personally take an interest in the matter, but I was very impressed with the level of service I received.

Here's the email:

Dear Mr. Marc Jackson,
We inform you that the wine is very old, dated of the 24 April of 1969.
According our records we inform you that the serial number it was given by us to
the shipper, at the time, António José da Silva - Vinhos Lda, that today
correspond at Quinta do Noval. Take to account that is a very old wine,
unfortunately we can't' say the type of port wine within the bottle

Given that many bottles do not have a seal applied until they are shipped the answer from the IDVP doesn't really confirm the age of the wine, only that the seal was applied in 1969. The wine could be many years older than this.

Do you still have the bottle? If so, could you please post some pictures of it here?

You're correct (I never really thought about that) - but any date information that the IVDP could provide would be dependent on when the bottle was released. I'll post a picture of the bottle when I get a chance.

Hopefully your bottle is a VP that was 4 years old when the seal was applied - and preferrably with Nacional stamped on the cork
