I had a call from Alan tonight to ask if I had heard of AAF port from 1900 - at first I was bemused by the name but then thought of Antonia Adelaide Ferreira, born 1811, who was one of the greatest Douro landowners of all time - at one point she owned 24 Quinta's including Vesuvio and Vargellas.
Anyway, Alan is now trying to chat up some 196 year old woman in a bar in Albafuera who claims to have known Barron Forrester :?

Some halfwit, who knew very little about Port, but cooked a mean steak! Was telling me how I should try a Messiah 2003, or a Fonseca 2000 to finish off my meal. You can imagine how that went!
He then felt a little under pressure and came out with one of those odd shaped bottles, with AAF imprinted on the bottle. Said it was a 100 years old and worth a fortune! Derek confirmed what it stood for.
And all of a sudden, this dope said he'd known that all along!
I began to think of my signature, (below), and thought he should stick to Steaks!
Thanks Derek!
Trip going well, but just too much Golf Food and Port!!! Dont worry....I'm taking a few for the Team!

Anything for the touristos...
So, did you tell him to stick that 100-year-old beast back in the cellar for another 100 years "until it was properly aged"???

Alan,
He was talking about the Messias brand of Port, which pretty much is not worth your time whatsoever when it comes to VP.
BTW, the AAF is more than likely Ferreira's 1900 Colheita. I have one sitting in the cellar. You'd be wise to take a punt on a glass, unless your golfing buddies are willing to split the bottle with you as we know you like 'em with significant bottle age.

Roy, that's what I thought until Alan told me the barman wanted 2000 Euro's for the bottle

Alan,
I'll sell you my bottle for a mere 1600 Euros + shipping! But you'd have to write a TN.

Hi Guys,
Thanks for the comments, I´m vaguely sober at the Moment but with the Champions League result (Football) it wont last.
As for Portugal, the Pubs and Clubs are woeful in the Algarve, but the Supermarkets and wine shops are heaven. Hopefully, more to follow...
Keep the faith,
Alan.

Alan,
Just in case you find yourself in a 24/7 Port Shop - I will be off to bed around 12:00 tonight so may not be available for instant valuations
Derek
PS: Do you want me to e-mail Debs and ask her to clear all the stuff out the downstairs cupboard and fill it with wine racks?

There are really only 3 things of note to go to the Algarve for:
a. To see the incredible variations of azulejos
b. The beach ... or as Mario put it rather succinctlyon our recent trip, "We the Portuguese, sell the sun to the ___s."
c. Golfing
Nightlife and fine wine are not the area's strong suit.

Roy,
although your right, I would add the ryder 'Cultured Night Life'. We're finding loads of reasons to stay up until the early hours. But its just not Port Orientated!!! Which is surprising.

Here's (Waiter in the yellow shirt) the half wit I refer to who tried to flog us LBV's for ridiculous prices, telling us it was a bargain and the best Port money could buy. Then of course he produced his €2000 AAF bottle.

Cooked a nice steak though.

It looks like a really nice restaurant and glad the food was solid. Of course their suggestion for that kind of money for the Port was less than good salesmanship, although you must have looked like a small group of wealthy tourists.
Alan,
Is this a restaurant that you would recommend to others?
