Three Young Terrantez

I have been comparing three different terrantez.

Broadbent Old Reserve Terrantez: Hint of maple sugar flavor. Simple. Short finish.

1988 D’Oliveira Harvest Terrantez: Green apple and lime flavors. Slightly sweet. Pleasant acidity. Balanced. Medium finish. Nice fragrance when opened. Bottled 2003

1976 Blandy’s Terantez: Taste of fudge and green tea. Medium sweetness, less than the Broadbent or 1954T Leacock. Nice acidity and balance. Medium finish. Dark toward brown in color. Bottled in 1997.

Comparing the three, the Broadbent is the sweetest, the D’Oliveira is the driest. The Blandy’s was the most acidic, but not overly so. All three are sweeter than the 1977T D’Oliveira. In my opinion the Blandy and Broadbent are over-priced, especially compared to D’Oliveira’s. In order, I preferred the Blandy, D'Oliveira, then Broadbent.

Gary,

Thank you, it is always great to find the impressions of Terrantez and I have only tried the Broadbent of these three.

In your opinion, which offered the greatest overall complexity aromatically and also on the palate?

Roy,

I think that the D'Oliveira offered slightly more complexity in both areas. Since it is relatively drier, I find it easier to distinguish components of the flavor. At this time, I get a slight note of quinine. A week after opening, the dominant flavor characteristic of the Blandy is a pleasant sweetness.

The Blandy has had very little fragrance. Having said that, I think that age has dulled my sense of smell and the pollen season in New England has dulled it even more.

I wish that somebody would import more of the younger Terrantez bottlings. It seems that the UK is getting all of them. Maybe I'll have to open the 1950T Barbeito, but, having only one, I'm reluctant.

Gary,

Having had only one so far, I can tell you that this is something to treasure for a very special occasion. I only wish there was a way to buy more, but it is no longer available for sale. Keep your hands off the 1950 if you can.
