For The Love Of Port

Hi all,

as a new member from the Netherlands im very pleased to be here. I just recently started to develop a deeper interest in port. The past years i only drank the supermarket ports (which can be quite drinkable too sometimes). The past couple of months i started to collect the more reknown ports and stored them away in my climate-controlled wine cabinet. At the local wine-seller i bought some Niepoorts 1985 and 1997 for very cheap prices. At them moment i have the following port-wines:

1997 Niepoort Porto Vintage (Portugal, Douro, Porto) 5
2000 Quinta da Romaneira Porto Vintage (Portugal, Douro, Porto) 3

My question now is about the 1935 Nicolau de Almeida Porto. I already asked Roy about it whether he can provide me with some information who this shipper was and now i want to ask the same on the forum.
Is there anybody outthere who can tell me some more about this shipper ? I heared he was a wine-maker at Ferreira's.

I'm not 100% sure, but I think this brand might be associated to Ramos Pinto. This association comes from the name João Nicolau de Almeida, who is the chief winemaker of the Ramos Pinto house. Then again, I might wrong.

Let us know what you find out.

I did a search at their site but their Nicolau de Almeida was born in 1949 and my wine is from 1935. But maybe it is a relative of him. I will ask them also if they know more about this wine.

i've contacted the company of Ramos Pinto and this is what they came up with:

Dear Sir

In fact, the company which produced the bottled that you bought no longer exists and it used to be called Nicolau de Almeida and not João Nicolau de Almeida. João is the first name of Ramos Pinto's winemaker and Nicolau de Almeida are both family names.

This company Nicolau de Almeida belonged to the ancestors of Mr. João
Nicolau de Almeida (his father family) while the House of Ramos Pinto was part of the patrimony owned by the family of his mother. It's was very common at the time that the families owning Port Wine Houses would share this kind of family bounds.

So, in conclusion, the company Nicolau de Almeida has been extinguished
many years ago.

today i bought 2 other vintages from this shipper. I stumbled upon another local wineseller and immediately saw the label from a distance. It was the year 1967 so i bought it. The seller said he also had a 1944 vintage so i had to buy that one too. € 210 less i went outside with a happy smile on my face. Turns out they have approx. 12 bottles of the 1967 left and a original case of the 1944 too. I have to have that case now !! I know, i'm a freak !

Good news, today i received this email:

In fact it is not easy give you a right answer because the wine you have bought were produced and sold (?) in the first years of IVDP existence and we have any records about the company Nicolau de Almeida & C.ª (or A. Nicolau de Almeida & C.ª, Lda).

Nevertheless we believe that Nicolau de Almeida & Cª were a “second” firm of Correia Ribeiro, Filhos, Lda, a Port Wine company registered in IVDP as shipper.

Correia Ribeiro, Filhos, Lda were bought, some years later, by Real Companhia Velha.

In June 1961 IVDP sold to that company (Correia Ribeiro, Filhos, Lda) the last seal of guarantee.

We suggest you to contact Real Companhia Velha (email: rcvelha@realcompanhiavelha.pt; site: http://www.realcompanhiavelha.pt) and probably they could give you more and better information about your bottle of Port Wine “Finest Reserve Vintage 1935”.

It has been great reading your very interesting posts since you have joined us. Glad to have you here!

I know and have met Ana at Ramos Pinto. Very nice gal to say the least. But I must admit that I was extremely impressed that you received a direct response from the head master at the IVDP.

He never answers me directly, but I think that is because Mario left the IVDP due to me and the FTLOP. I have actually written something very nice about Mr. Monteiro in the upcoming newsletter!

I must say, i did not know Mr. Jorge Monteiro is the head master of the IVDP, and i am deeply honoured by his response.

Now lets hope i hear more exciting news from the Real Companhia Velha. I keep you informed.
