OK, who stole my Port

I was bidding on a bottle of 1977 Dow's on Wine Commune this weekend and one of you Wine Communists spiked me by a dollar and got my bottle. :x It's actually the fault of my tech guy in my office because the system crashed again and I did not get the notice that I had lost the bid until after the lot had closed. White zinfandel in his Xmas stocking this year.
I hope you like it because it is a great Port. I had one in 2005 that cost me about $140 at Sherry Lehmans and it was rated the best out of five at our Port horizontal. Better than the Fonseca, Warre, Crofts and Smith Woodhouse. Taylor was corked and Grahams got lost in transit.

Jay, I feel for your loss...but you must be careful: with the amount of lurkers out there you are ensuring that you won't get the next bottle at a reasonable price either... :twisted:

I saw that wine and was going to bid on it but it said sign of seepage so I passed.

jay--i wouldn't worry too much. i've seen 77 dows very recently for $100/bottle, and $225 per mag. let me know if you're interested and i can send you the merchant info. i think its a port that still needs a bit more time though.

So how much did the bottle go for at auction?
I paid $34 per bottle for my 2 cases and still have most of it left. Fortunately I have had it many times at trade tastings, verticals and generous friends. I return the favor but not with such youngsters. The Dow though is one of my favorite 1977s.
Remarkably extracted, it was an amazing and concentrated young Port ... although I don't think I had it until it was 10 years old already. It epitomized the descriptor: "blackstrap" for a VP of this ilk.

The FCC would throw me in jail for what I really want to post, but then again I have some bottles of 1970s era Laffite and Latour with price tags still on them for $23.75 and $25. I just don't have enough experience to judge the 1977 as a "young" port. The only thing I've had that's older is the 1951 Offley Colheita, which was bottled in 1988.
