My wife and I are thinking of taking a vacation this holiday season that does not involve heading back to the states. It will be our first time abroad without family for x-mas and we're thinking of going to Madiera or for a complete cultural switch maybe Instanbul! Anyways we'd be more interested in heading to Madeira but we're afraid that it would be a hard time to see any Madeira houses. If we did go when is better the week before x-mas, after or maybe the week after the 1st of the year. Any good reasons to be there on new years? We're looking for an affordable visit and a chance to see this island whose wines we love so much....THoughts?

There is a great reason to be there on New Years! One of the biggest draws to Madeira is the spectacular fireworks display in Funchal harbor on New Year's Eve.

Finding accommodations might be tough...

I have been a few times there at those times. First weeks of December are very cheap charterwise, and also the first week after New Year.

Christmas and New Year are very expensive ( and I have avoided it ). Also the hotels often "force" you to have a Christmas/New Year dinner at the hotel you are staying since they include it in the price.

It is a bit cool, but wear something warm at night-time and have dinners indoor. Else it is great !

Search around for the best charterpackage. Never min cramped planes, it is only 3.5 hours from Britain ( Close to 5 hours from Norway ).

ok so getting there a day before newyears may be the best bet and then staying for a week. is it possible to visit Madeira houses at this time? or is everything closed?
