This last May I attended Riberexpo 2005 - the annual showcase for Ribera del Duero Wines - in the village of Peñafiel, Spain. It's a quite good event and hopefully next year I will be able to make it again. A visit to Peñafiel's castle is a must - a Wine Museum is located in its premises. The Riberexpo's organizers claim it to be the second largest wine event being held in Spain right after "Alimentaria" in Barcelona.jfgmmg wrote:[...]Recently I tried my first Ribera del Duero, Condado de Haza 2001 (not sure, but I think it's a 100% Tempranillo) [...]
Anyway, while in Peñafiel I tasted many interesting Ribera's and, of course, decided to buy a few of them. One curiosity I found is that in Ribeira del Duero, Tempranillo is known as Tinta del Paíz !!! - And, also in Spain but I do not know where, they even call it Tinto Fino instead !!!
So, it seems that this very same grape is called by different names depending on its geography:
» Tinta Roriz ........... [Douro Valley, Portugal].
» Aragonêz ............. [Alentejo, Portugal].
» Tinta del Paíz ...... [Ribera del Duero, Spain].
» Tinto Fino ............ [somewhere, Spain].
» Tempranillo ......... [elsewhere, Spain].
In conclusion: one grape = five names !!
I wonder whether there's still more names out there for this one Varietal alone :!:
