California Ports

This has probably been tossed around on FTLOP a few times, but what the heck...

I tried a Pedroncelli recently and really dug it. I think it was a 2002 vintage. I'm a sucker for hints of caramel and this one really stuck to me. Others in the party really liked it too and were astounded that it was a California port.

There are others I've tried and hardly liked.

What are your thoughts? Any recommends?

I'm a fan of Ficklin's wines. They use more traditional Port grape varieties. Sounds like you'd like the cask aged wines. Their 10 year old tawny is a good buy.

Ficklin also made a killer 1991 vintage port wine.

I don't have my notes with me, but Ficklin also put out a series of vintages in the 90's from a vinyard of traditional varieties up in Lake county. The ones I had were excellent. Unfortunately the vinyard was pulled up because the Port varieties did not sell well.
