Funny you should post this just now Roy, as something just came to mind as a topic for an offline. I'm afraid it probably won't fall into the "realistic" category.

Having just picked up a bottle of Niepoort's "VV" port, I was thinking of the appropriate setting to open such an old and rare port. Then it dawned on me that it would be great to have an "Old & Rare" offline. I'm thinking where the craziest of the crazy comes out of cellars, like '31 Noval and 19th century stuff. I realize that the wines themselves won't be related to each other, but it sure sounds like fun in its hedonism. I could host it here in Chicago since it's centrally located, or it could be Seattle as the others you do.

Anyway, just thinking out loud.

Is that because there is no declaration for another 6 years. That's a long time to wait for another big horizontal. We could do "1986 and 1987 SQVP's and their friends". But i like John's idea better.

Andy, next year is '66 followed by '77 and then '48. ;-)

I think it would be fun to do a 40-yr old taste-off. We've talked about it before but just never got around to actually doing it.

Darn, I was going to do an OLD COLHEITA theme for the FTLOP 10th Anniversary party this year. Leave it to the Pollack. :Naughty:

Agree w/ Glenn about 2016 - doing 1966s. So keep your eyes open for bottles.

In 2017: 1957-1967-1977
Like we did in 2007, sort of like what John is talking about ... Great and rare old Colheitas ... back to ... well, as far back as we can find. That is a given. Will he be able to keep his hands off the Niepoort VV for that long? [cheers.gif]


For this year though ... actually, I really like Glenn's idea that we've been talking about, a comprehensive 40 Year Old Tawny Port tasting. That would be killer! We could combine this with the 10th Anniversary and do one of each over the course of the weekend in late July; date still TBD.

These are just thoughts, not dictates. I'm not trying to dismiss any of the previous great ideas. So keep your votes coming in.

I put the bottle in my off-site storage locker at Domaine, but two years is a lot to ask! :lol:

Could do the Colheitas for the 10th Anniversary and the 40-yr olds some other time this spring. The end of July is a long ways away, after all. Plenty of time in between for another tasting! :lol: [cheers.gif]

Most of my old Colheitas are from the FTLOP buys, so not that unusual. I've purchased a few at auction (and consumed most of those), and like most of my FTLOP buys, they are in 375 ml bottles.

But I still like these ideas and will see what I can come up with.

Perhaps one of the tastings can incorporate some of the best 55's as well, following tone of them being 60 now

In addition for the 40's, I have Brunheda, Portal, Revolta, Burmester, and half bottles of Casa Santa Efemia. I also have a bottle of Taylors that's been in bottle for 20 years or so. :munch:
