Cossarts Duo Centenary Celebration Sercial - can anyone help?

Post by Stephen B »

Hello everyone,

I wonder if anyone can help me? I bought a lot of spirits and wine recently at auction, and in amongst the bottles of calvados was secreted away this bottle of Madeira... googled but find nothing on this item specifically, although I learnt a bit about the Cossart family. So, I was wondering - can anyone can shed any light? Is it something special? Valuable? Rare? Or should I just get stuck in drinking it?

Thanks,
Steve

Steve,

I think this belongs to the "Duo-Centenary"-series that are aged 15 years; they were issued as "Bual" as well as "Sercial".

From what is in there is afaik an aged blend.

My guess of the value is ~50 bucks and the Buals I have in my cellar will be drunk by myself.

Cheers

Thank you for your help Andreas. These days I'm still taken by surprise by what is expensive, and truth be told, an expensive Madeira I would have sold on - but I think its safe to say I'll be opening this one up very soon for a winter's evening soiree sometime soon! It is extraordinary how wines, whiskeys etc and it seems ports and madeiras too, have rocketed in price over the last few decades - in the 70s and 80s even as a student, I could just about afford a great wine or 25 yo whiskey on occasion - I doubt I would these days.
