Hi,

I've recently been fortunate enough to come into possession of a bottle of Companhia Vinicola da Madeira Terrantez 1795. I've attached a few photos of the bottle, which is in remarkably good condition and the fill level is in the lower neck. I am trying to find out more about the bottle and perhaps figure out how much it is worth, and was wondering if anyone could assist me. I have found several bottles of CVM Terrantez 1795 on the internet but all of them either have a gold label or are stenciled directly onto the bottle. My bottle has a black label as you can see, and has "Companhia Vinicola da Madeira LDA" embossed on the glass around the shoulder which is another feature other bottles seem to lack. However my bottle has a similar straw capsule to other bottles I have seen.

Any words of wisdom would be appreciated!!

Does the lack of responses mean that no one has seen a bottle like this? I've tried and failed to get answers elsewhere so in the words of Princess Leia Organa Solo - "you're my only hope".

A very well known wine. We had a bottle at the Terrantez tasting some years ago. [cheers.gif]

I think I am going to hang onto this bottle for the moment, but I would like to sell the two bottles of 1842 Terrantez I have. Link here:

Paul, any chance you'd be interested in selling the 1795 now? I'm thinking of buying a bottle from London but would rather buy it in the U.S.

Thanks for this Peter - that makes for fascinating reading. However I still haven't seen another 1795 CVM Terrantez with the same black label as mine - I have only seen them with the gold labels.

Dear Paul,
here are the variations I have seen so far:

Gold label on embossed bottle with wicker cap.
Gold label on embossed bottle with wicker cap and JNV paper seal.

Gold label on smooth bottle with wicker cap.
Gold label on smooth bottle with wicker cap and JNV paper seal.

Gold label on smooth bottle with foil cap and JNV paper seal.

Gold label on smooth bottle with wax-sealed cap and JNV paper seal.

Stencils on smooth bottle with sealed cap and JNV paper seal.

So that means 7 variations, which indicates that bottling took place over a longer period of time under various circumstances. However they all have the "Terrantez 1795" on the main label, None of these have an extra slip label with the grape and the vintage on it. So your bottle would be a first for me.
Best
Peter
