The building of America's first major new airport since Denver in the 1990s.

Post by Roy Hersh »

I lived in Colorado when then Denver Mayor Pena decided a new airport was necessary to replace Stapleton Airport, solely because there was no room to build one new runway going from 3 at the existing airport, to 4 runways at the new DIA. He then created the plan for this to be built, after voters decided the new jobs in the area would be a very good thing for their economy (simplified version). Pena was rewarded for getting this feat done, the first new international airport to be built in the USA in decades and given a cabinet position with the then POTUS. IMO, the airport was built a little too far from civilization, but I digress. Now in NYC, 20 mins. from where I grew up in Queens, LaGuardia Airport will be redesigned, and a brand new airport installed and then the old one torn down. More here:

At first I thought you saying Denver was building a new airport... I love that air port... Bring your own Cigar bar and a lot of in shape women walking around; what else do you need for a layover? La Guardia could use a do-over. Big move, but I think will be worth it in long run for sure.

I agree. Denver is great, hopefully a new iteration of La Guardia will be equally enjoyable to travel through. The current version has earned its less than flattering reputation IMHO.

Denver copied the design from Atlanta Hartsfield, because it worked. You won't be able to put that design into the space at LGA, but they will have no problem with improving things.

Oh, and there are now 6 runways at DEN, and the rail line into downtown is just about complete. But the new hotel is an ugly distraction.

You have to admit, the airport was put "way out there" when it first opened, it seemed as long (from Boulder) as going up to the ski resorts. A slight exaggeration, but not by much. Anyway, I totally agree about LGA, I never fly into that ugly and dysfunctional airport even though I grew up about 10 miles away. For the past decade when heading to NY, I have only flown into JFK, (no picnic!) and on rare occasions, Newark. But LaGuardia was one of the worst airports I've ever been to and a real black eye for NY.

Newark might be the best of the three, and that's saying something. [berserker.gif]

We refer to that as Western Kansas.
