Women as Somms

Ambition driven by passion, rather than money, is as strong an elixir as is Port. http://www.fortheloveofport.com

I think women have more sensitive palates, but that it also something that goes out of whack with pregnancy. I recall a brewer saying they knew when a woman on a quality tasting panel was pregnant before she knew, or at least before she had told anyone.

I agree, on the whole women seem to have more sensitive palates, but as with many male dominated hobbies/professions, they seem to have had plenty of resistance to participating and rising to the top levels. The winemaker I worked for back when I was getting into wine was by far the better taster of the owning couple, and taught me a ton about tasting. She has a heck of a palate.

The 4-time PNWBA Team of the Year is a husband & wife team. He does the cooking, but she's in charge of their flavor profile. She's never been tested, but everyone assumes she's a supertaster because her palate is just that good. I've introduced them to Port and she loves it, so now I bring a bottle to every competition when I know they're going to be cooking. :)
