For The Love Of Port

Pick one Port producer whose Port wine you've tried, one that has only been around for 10 years or less ... which one do you believe is making the best Ports today?

Is there a list of producers that fit into this category?

Yeah my initial reaction is Quevedo, but they've been around for more than 10 years. Maybe not well known for that long, but certainly producing Port.

10 years is a very young company for Port. Even I've been drinking Port for longer than that - it'd have to be a producer that started after I did!

My suggestion would be Duorum: an excellent Port!

10 years is not a long time. I love wood age so that's not much. For me, it would be companies with a long history, but who only lately commercialized.
I'm going to say Viera e Sousa. They have long aged stocks, but only recently reobtained their label and reintroduced their wines.

There are many others and I could change this to producers that nobody heard of until more recently such as: Duorum, DR, Bulas, Tedo, Vieira de Sousa and at least a handful of others.

Great idea. If you had a list where we could scale 1-10 each producer in respective categories on port. Would be interesting to see the results. A check box for "never tasted" for each category.

I think Oscar Quevedo must take the prize for the most energetic promotion of his family's brand, and one set of official stats even suggests that his company is now selling more juice than Noval!

However, the Quevedo family reserves go back to 1971 with a white colheita made by his grandfather, so Roy's 10yr deadline doesn't apply.

Most of the new emergent names have a family dynasty behind them that previously sold on their wine to other companies, and the list of genuine newbies is hard to determine..

I guess a better question is; What new Port companies have started in the past 10 years? Anyone have a list?

To be accurate, as Quevedo has launched a 1968 Colheita at least 5 years ago, 1971 is moot. Yes, many of the companies that now bottle their own labels were existing as quintas that sold their production to the large Port companies. But once they met the criteria to become Port producers, and started labeling their own Ports, many from my short list above are new. We can quibble if it is 10 or 15 or even 21 years (Portal), regardless .. we can still discuss the main gist of the discussion.

That 1968 Quevedo is wonderful, but it is my understanding it isn't an IVDP product released commercially.

Two "newer" producers that stick out to me as I type are Infantado (been digging drier ports recently) and Quevedo.

Not entirely true. I purchased 1994 Quevedo LBV very close to their quinta in 2001 = 14 years ago. Posted a tasting note in 2010. Unfortunately both bottles purchased at the time was very bad, and had probably been heat treated somewhere on the way. The port was called Quinta Vale d’Agodinho Quevedo LBV port.

Quevedo is a great company, but if I should look for the ”Best new Port producer in the past 10 years”, I would look elsewhere.
Wine & Soul (Pintas) would be higher up on that list being able to produce very nice vintage ports and tawny. Their oldest vintage port is 2003 (consistent in quality) and I really look forward to taste it some years ahead.

Alves de Sousa has been around for some time, but when it comes to vintage port they have made significant step up the last 10 years when they started to make it with more focus than before.

Bulas will be very interesting to follow in the years to come. Both for tawnies and vintage/LBV.

Good question - what about Vasques de Carvalho or Quinta das Lamelas ?
