That sounds a lot like these whiskey sticks in concept.

Some friends at Microsoft tried the whiskey sticks. For certain very specific kinds of Scotch they worked very well. That'd be the ones that are supposed to taste like burnt wood.

Isn't the buttery flavor from diacetyl, typically a byproduct of malo-lactic fermentation?

Yes as well as aging it in lots of new oak, especially American oak.
