The infamous "Tunel do Marão" (The Marão Tunnel) was completed on October 8, 2015, connecting both entrances under the mountain. It will open to driving traffic in early 2016. The tunnel is 5.6 km long (3.5 miles) and will become the longest road tunnel in the Iberian Peninsula.

Woohoo! That should shave a lot of time off driving up there and back. Glad it's finally almost done.

The tunnel isn't on Google maps yet, but if you look just south of the current roadway in satellite view, you can see tunnel entrances. Hopefully the above link will work. The west portal is between the IP4 (A4) and N15. The east portal is about 1 km southeast of Campeã.
