Perhaps counter to the tradition and original beauty (o.k., not perhaps, it is), it occurs to me that you could probably come out with a way to create these with a computer. Plug in your photo or artwork, convert to monochrome, and tweak the levels for presentation, and then get a printer that can deposit ceramic glaze. If your printer only prints a tile at a time, cut the image up into pieces. The right Photoshop filter could make things look like brushstrokes.

I have seen some vendors online offering just as you say. I want to do such tiles as a backsplash, but may just do patterns instead of a scene. The light blue and white works in the kitchen.

Yes, google turned up some hits, including a company just down the road from me in Golden. Apparently there are a few printers out of China that will print glaze directly on a tile, and then there are some companies that have modified regular printers to shoot glaze onto a decal of some sort which you then apply to the tile. The former approach seems better to me, then just fire the tiles in a kiln.
