How much do you spend per month on Port?

Post by A dschus »

How much do you spend on port per month? Simply a question out of curiosity.

Since I started a few months ago. I would say I'm near the $300 range on average.

My spending varies wildly depending on what's available. If I see a good deal (like the Krohn sales at Premier Cru this summer), I jump on them.

Unfortunately I'm still buying more than I'm drinking! I need a 4th and 5th fridge now... [beg.gif]

It does vary a lot, as a case is bought one month, a single bottle the next. But according to cellartracker.com, this year I've averaged $144/month. That doesn't include any glasses purchased in restaurants. At this point I am not trying to build up my stock, but maintain it.

For the past 6 years I've averaged $223/month, probably a little more the past few. Frankly I'm surprised its so low. I will add my shopping has changed a lot. In the beginning I stuck to local B&M shops, now I find auctions and other venues (like the FTLOP buying ops) (but still patronize some local shops carefully) so while spending about the same I'm getting much better quality port.
Any Port in a storm!

Good point. I'm at the time where I'm building a cellar. I'm not sure at what point that ends and I'm only trying to maintain. I'm sure it's subjective to everyone. How long did it take you to build your current cellar to now just maintaining what you own?

It is hard to make up in money, I try to stay around 24 bottles a year. That way I still stock more than I drink and can build up a cellar for when I am older :)

Well, that depends on your answer to the question, "How much can you spend per month on Port?"

And as a practical issue, if you are buying at auction or old bottles from retail, you have to wait some time just for things to become available.

Somewhere in the 50-60 bottles a year range, but that can vary widely by price depending on how many of those bottles are older v. stuff like LBVs.

My purchasing habits have changed dramatically since I began buying Port in the mid-1980s.

My heyday of purchasing Ports was from about 1990-1996 with a second wave between 1999-2005. Although I consumed a lot more Vintage Port back then, and far less in the way of Colheitas and Tawnies (comparatively), my stock reached about 75 cs. at peak. I am down to about 60 cases now and still do purchase Port, but only when I see something I must have. That happens more than I would expect, but as my cellar's VP stocks have aged right alongside me; I tend to buy more wood-aged Ports than Vintage nowadays.
Ambition driven by passion, rather than money, is as strong an elixir as is Port. http://www.fortheloveofport.com

Interesting Roy. Counting bottles, I have about 75% of the Port you have.

And is that 6 bottle cases or 12 bottle ones?

I am as well, but I have learnt the hard way that assumptions really is the mother of all screw ups. (RAH: Edit for TOS Violation).

There is quite a big difference between 360 & 720 bottles of port

Regardless it is quite the collection. I am sitting at a whooping 9 bottles [yahoo.gif]

Getting into Portwine is the most expensive hobby, I have ever had!

Started collecting in 2013. But have been opening maby 100+ bottles since, so it takes some time building something solid.

Right now I have 130 bottles, 50% witch are Niepoorts. And as a total Tawnydude, a wast majority are from 1970 or older.
My budget? One month, maby $ 400-500, other months significantly more...

Funny, opening a great wine in great company, seems to be an easy thing to do. And allthough, the Port sometimes is more expensive than the entire meal, fades away even before decanting the bottle.

In the US, when "1 case" is used as a generic unit of measurement it means 12 bottles. So when Roy says he has 60 cases in his cellar, in the US that means 720 bottles.

But when used to refer to a specific example of a case of wine, it refers to however many bottles are in that particular case. For example, when talking about "1 case of 1994 Vesuvio" it would mean 6 bottles because that's how Vesuvio is shipped.

Like everything else in the English language, it's confusing. [shrug.gif]
