We see retail prices, we see auction prices. We all want our port collection to be worth top dollar, yet (I can only speak for myself) want to pay as little as I can for port. So, what's the real value? How do you go about pricing a collection?
I am not talking about special bottles like '31 Noval and '48 Fonseca, but bottles one can find by the case or stuff that is under 50 years old.

Well, firstly Value does not equal Price. This is a Love Affair, not an investment. Yet I live to find "the Deal" as well.
To me, there are Three Prices
1. What I paid for my collection (I include all taxes/shipping etc.)
2. What is the retail price (That is if I bought XYZ port right now, what would I have to pay. Wine-Searcher is usually good to establish)
3. If I had to sell. I just take 50% of retail price as per #2 above....but it could be even less. Depends how much I need to liquidate (isn't that an ironic word here?).
Hopefully, #1 is lower than #2 and I hope I never have to engage #3.
In terms of Value, I think the love wants me to believe #2, but in reality its probably closer to #3. My enjoyment is more than all.

I've never really considered it, but I suppose that to me the "value" of my collection is what it would take to replace it. Ergo, the lowest price I can find on WineSearcher.com.
Hopefully #1 is always lower than #2!![Praying [beg.gif]](./images/smilies/beg.gif)

Ambition driven by passion, rather than money, is as strong an elixir as is Port. http://www.fortheloveofport.com

No, but I am in process of moving wines, building a wine area, and realized I have more vintage port than I thought. Not a lot by FTLOP standards, but a lot when I talk wine with non port-crazed wine fans.Roy Hersh wrote:Moses,

As a rule of thumb, I find adding 4% p.a. to the price I paid for VP keeps the valuation reasonably up to date.

That makes for a wonderful additional macro to add to my spreadsheet :)Tom Archer wrote:As a rule of thumb, I find adding 4% p.a. to the price I paid for VP keeps the valuation reasonably up to date.

Re: Port Valuations - Where do you stand?
I insured my collection for the midpoint between what I paid, and what cellartracker says it is worth. My price is about 2/3 of the cellertracker valuation. I bargain hunt, and I think a lot of people on cellartracker appear to be happy paying a lot more for bottles than I do. But if I had to replace my entire collection, I don't think I could find all those past low prices again so easily.
