For The Love Of Port

i'm thinking of buying glasses and want to know what i should get. i'm on a Reserve Ruby budget, so i won't be buying Waterford glasses any time soon, either.

i know most barware lines have a 'port glass'. i've read that people who actually drink port don't like those because they're too small and prefer red wine glasses so you can get your nose in to smell it and lots of air can swish around it. but these were articles mentioning "people who actually drink port". that's you guys! so what glass do you actual people who actually like to drink port like to drink it from?

i've seen good reviews of Riedel tasting glasses and am curious about ISO glasses, but please recommend if you prefer other glasses, too!

when i get together with friends, a movie, and a bottle, we're most likely to just use wine glasses or rocks glasses. at home i usually use a red wine glass.

Riedel's Port Glass (across all of their lines) is really good. I use their Vinum, but that may be too expensive for you at ~$20/stem.

I think a red wine glass is too large. If a restaurant doesn't have proper Port glasses, I ask to have it served in a white wine glass. Most restaurants tend to use a cordial for Port, which is far too small.

I like to use my IVDP glasses, but regularly use a white wine glass, which is also what I rent when I'm hosting a tasting.

In trying to find a balance between utility cost and quality I decided on the Schott Siza port glasses (IVDP). The are perfect for Port and they have survived being knocked over so far. Slightly less expensive and can be used for other wines as well. Again I'm a fan of the "Tritan" crystal.

Speaking or Riedel Vinum Port glasses, (my everyday + favorite) style of Port glass ...

Has anybody seen these "reasonably priced" recently? If so, please share where.

Last weekend while up in Edmonton, they had these for sale in a wine shop that I've never been to before. A pair cost 86 CDN. That was a bit rich in my book. Would love more, as I broke 2 this year.

Yikes! Yeah that's too expensive. You can get them in the US for $43/pair from Williams Sonoma, and they're not known for good prices so I suspect you can probably find them a little cheaper elsewhere. But $20/stem does seem to be their new target price for the Vinum Port glass.

If you (in general, not Roy specifically) just want some cheap glasses, several of us own cases of the INAO tasting glass from Marjorie Lumm. They're $2.75/stem in cases of 36, or ~$5/stem in smaller lots. Cheap, but sufficient.

I swear by these glasses and that sounds like an okay price. I sold them briefly on FLTOP, but forgot what I sold them far. I bet it was cheaper, but that was one time deal. They're studier glasses than Riedel's; that's for sure.

Current list price in Australia for a set of 2 is $99.95 AU on the riedel website. No doubt, that will come down with some sort of special offer after christmas but it will still sit at around the Canadian price. I did buy a set a few years back, and have broken one of them. If I break the other one I will probably just use the overture white glasses after that.

If you're on a budget, I would go for ISO tasting glasses; which it turns out (I didn't know until now) is the same thing as the INAO glasses mentioned above. Simple, typical white-wine like glasses, they can usually be found for around 4 for $20, and work well and are often used by many wine vendors for their tastings, as well as by us.

cheers to you, thank you! on one hand, their being delicate is worrisome. on the other, two of these is cheaper than the set of six INAO glasses. hm...
