Lígia Marques is the Sandeman Brand Ambassador. Born and raised in Portugal, where she lives, Lígia entered the wine business in 1991, after several years’ work in the area of communication and entertainment.

Lígia started with The House of Sandeman Oporto back in 1991, working directly with George Sandeman (7th generation of the founding family), and since then took on several roles and projects with the company. Her main area of activity has been in Public Relations and communication. Lígia has been working with Sandeman now for over 15 years and has a long history in Porto and Sherry wines production, communication and marketing.

Lígia has been involved full time with Porto and Sherry education (created, organizes and co-presents the Sandeman educational seminars), did numerous tasting and wine events worldwide, and participated in wine fairs, forums, presentation and publications, besides acting full time as press officer and spokesperson for the Sandeman brand. From 2003 to 2006, following the integration of Sandeman in Sogrape (the family owned Portuguese leading fine wine company) she expanded her role, taking on the communication of the various brands of the group worldwide. Over these years she has also been welcoming several hundred trade guests, clients and VIP visitors to the company facilities in Europe. Since 1998, Ligia is also a full member of the 'Confraria do Vinho do Porto' (the Porto Wine Brotherhood), one of the first ladies to be inducted by Sandeman.

Q & A for Lígia Marques

Q: What's your favorite Porto type?
A: Tough one. Definitely it depends on moment and mood. A rich ruby Porto (young Vintage like Vau Vintage included), slightly cold, it's unique for winter time, a fire place, some dark chocolate to bite, cocooning at home or sharing a moment with friends... A lingering intense aged tawny Porto (Sandeman 20 or 40 YO) is also unique "served" with a book, good music or a good film, in good company, simply staring through the window to the beautiful amber and golden autumn colors that seem to reflect in the glass.

Q: What's your favorite cheese?
A: Another tough one! Very tough. I think I would select one that is near my origins since I was born within 50 miles of the area and looking through my window at my parents house see those mountains. 'Serra da Estrela', a Portuguese cheese, made with sheep milk, intense yet soft at first and then growing in concentration and spice when cured (simple or with covered with paprika and olive oil). It's an amazing texture and intense taste...

Q: Do you have a favorite cheese condiment or way of enjoying cheese?
A: I enjoy it on its own; often prefer it with a rustic bread rather than a cracker biscuit; like it also cooked in different forms and with some refreshing or contrasting accompaniments (from a fresh vegetable or grape to a sweet pumpkin or tomato jam).

Q: What's your favorite Porto-food pairing (other than cheese)?
A: I think it's great to match the intensity or mildness of chocolate (depending on the Porto and chocolate) as well as some salty appetizers like a fresh foie sauteed served with a chilled 20 Years Old tawny (totally unsuited for a diet but great to the mind!) or the simplest thing in the world: a fresh full ripe juicy peach also with a tawny Porto. The peach opens and cleans the mouth and the chilled Porto 'explodes' in your mouth!

Q: What's your favorite non-Porto beverage?
A: This is the hardest! I like so many different beverages with or without alcohol! From a Champagne wine to a smooth Cognac, from a fresh fruit juice to coffee and tea ... Maybe I'll say water!! It's such a pleasure to find a good glass of water when I'm traveling! Makes me feel like home...

I know lots of people in the Port trade, both men and women. I must say that Ligia is one of the real bright lights I have ever met in the trade. Her knowledge on Port is encyclopedic, she is honest, Ligia handles controversial topics with aplomb and will not steer around an answer, she is the consummate professional at all times and knows far more about Port history and most other Port topics than I do.

Of all the women in the Port trade that I have met and had a chance to get to know well, I have the greatest respect for Ligia!

It is a shame that I have not seen her since June 2006, although I hope to change that on one of the trips next year.

Thanks Mario for sharing!
