It would be interesting to see what it does to the penny, given the comment that post-1982 copper-plated pennies will work in a pinch. I'd be surprised if the reaction from a glass of wine could remove plating, so I don't believe a copper-plated penny and a solid copper penny would be any different.

I suspect you are correct. How much sulfur is in a glass of wine compared to the surface area of the penny?
