(Not sure how much value you put into these things, but...)

TripAdvisor just named Porto as the #3 "Destination on the Rise" in the World. (Behind Tulum, Mexico and Cartagena, Columbia)

Cheers!

I like TripAdvisor a lot, and have posted a good number of reviews to it. I think it is a valuable tool, but not the be-all end-all tool. It is a good place to get ideas. For fine tuning, you really need to read reviews and filter, because not everyone has the same tastes. As for these ranking lists they put out for everything from best hotel pools to up-and-coming destinations, I think of them similarly. They are good for ideas, and a starting point for some virtual exploration. But they also are influenced by trendiness and the population writing the reviews, so one needs to take that into consideration.

But hey, I agree, Porto is a great destination on the rise. Tulum is a great place to go relax and explore a little bit, but I think it is much more trendy today just as a function of timing. Cartagena, on the other hand, is trending because of a changing socio-economic picture there in Columbia. Just MHO.

Outside of the ruins and some nice diving areas, Tulum to me is a bore. In fact, although I've been there 2x in the past few years, I never plan to return.
