A Small Warres Vertical

On Friday, just before the 27 inches of snow arrived, nine of us met to taste 6 Bottles of Warres. Overall, we were very impressed with the depth and quality of this producer. Everything was double decanted 13 hours prior except the Warrior whcih was just opened at that time. The WOTN but an 8-1 margin was the 1994 Warres VP (1 vote for 95 Cavadinha)---simply blew everything else away despite some other fine bottles. These we served in 3 pairs: VP vs VP; Cavadinha vs Cavadinha and the LBV vs. Warrior.
1994 Warres Vintage Port: Deep purple, reddish rim. Nose of pepper, brambles and aged berries. Marvelous mouth feel with a super-extended finish. Flavors of white cherry, ripe red berries, white pepper. Marvelous port, nuanced and lovely.
97 Points
1970 Warres Vintage Port: Burnt umber color with a light candy aroma. The flavors the emerge are strawberry and pomegranate candy, just a touch of aged fig. Dry moderate finish with a plum after taste that comes well at the end.
94 Points
1992 Warres Quinta da Cavadinha Vintage Port: Little fade of plum red to brownish rim. Smells a little oxidized and spicy. Sweet prunes, plum and golden raisins at the start. Finish is a bit syrupy and moderate. Pick up some grape skins and lingering dark red fruit with a little grip.
91 Points
1995 Warres Quinta da Cavadinha Vintage Port: Mahogany color with red brown rim. Dark berry aromas with a chocolate note. The taste seems younger than its age. Blackberry, cassis, bit of bramble/spice. Nice moderate plus finish. Have had this several times now and is a very good QPR.
93 Points
2003 Warres LBV: Deep purple with magenta rim, dry peppery aroma. Sweet with lots of dark berries--fruit bomb. Puckery finish that is tart. Standard good Warres LBV.
91 Points
Warres Warrior: Deep dark purple. Simple fruit mash aroma. Brambly dark fruit bomb…blackberry comes out with a short finish. Might be better if opened 24 hours ahead.
