The American Whiskey Punch is similar to a drink Lindsay and I created with the help of a bartender at Toulouse Petit on Queen Anne hill. I don't have exact measurements, but it went something like this:

1 oz rye whiskey
1 oz Sandeman 30-yr old Tawny Port
1 oz sour (at Toulouse Petit, it's a house-made concoction; mostly lemon but also some orange)
0.5 oz simple syrup (as needed to adjust sweetness to taste)
1-2 shakes bitters (also house-made at Toulouse Petit, and orange derived)
orange zest
serve with a sliver of orange peel/rind

That sounds awesome. Might dial back the age on the tawny to 20y, but I'll have to give it a try.

30 year tawny mixed? Are you mad? How about something with a tawny reserve or 10 year? Lol

I agree, even as a mixer, (kind of like cooking with good wine), a cocktail is vastly improved by the quality of its components. A few splashes of 30 year old is great if you have one open. I don't think I would open one just for using as a mixer though.

In this particular case, it just happened to be the only bottle of Port they had open in the bar. Lucky me!

The bartender just charged me for a glass of the 30-yr old, probably because nothing else in the glass came close on price.
