Which one would you choose out of the generally best modern Fonseca's:

1970 Fonseca
1985 Fonseca
1994 Fonseca
2011 Fonseca

One could be an overall pick, one could be a near or distance future drinking pick, but add some detail your reason. The price spread between them is not huge, so it is valid...

For current drinking, 1970 ... although a bottle of 1966 blew everyone away. But the 1970 is a perennial winner.

I would likely take the 1985 above the 1994, and definitely above the 2011 for several reasons, but even the 1985 needs a lot more time.

The '70 for me, and agree with Roy's assessment of the other vintages. I had the '70 fifteen years ago, and the '85 does not yet seem to me to be at the same point that the '70 was then.

'94 is as new I would go (with hesitation) on a Fonseca vertical. Drinking ports that aren't ready is of little interest for me. '42 - '85 would be neat.

I'd bump it up to '95 as that's a Port that's in a great spot right now. But I agree for the younger stuff, no need.

If I could arrange a location in TX near enough to one of the big cities early next year, would folks be interested in a vertical?

Not easy as they are all great in their own way.

First I'd go with the 1970, simply as it's the most mature and a wonderful VP.

Then it comes down to 1994 or 1985. Given the 1994 probably won't be mature for another 20+ years I have to go with the 1985. That still isn't mature but will be a little closer to it by the time I die.

At a Taylor vertical a few years ago we had a bunch of their SQVPs. For Fonseca you could throw in Q.d. Panascal and Guimaraens, in which case I would allow the 1998. It is more ready.

I'd be up for Texas, but I'd prefer Austin-S.A. area. You're probably thinking Houston or DFW? East coast can work too.

Only if in Boston. I know a couple that have deep vintages of Fonseca as well.

They're all great, but only the 1970 is mature right now. The 1985 is close, and is deceptively easy to drink, but it really needs a good 10 more years.

1994 and 2011... measured in decades. I'll probably get to taste some mature 1994 some time after I retire. 2011 is iffy unless I live to be 90!

I'm equidistant from Austin and Houston here in College Station, Dallas is a bit farther but still very reasonable for me. I'd probably be able to make any of the three cities work to host.

I'm in for a Fonseca vertical if it goes back several years from 1970 . Texas or East coast is fine w/me.

The 1970 is one of my all time favourite ports, so that's an easy pick. That said, the '85 is not far behind...

I would make every effort to come!

Well we could work on doing something in Boston. Could be grand or light hearted. I could host 6-10 people and figure 1.5 bottles per person... I have enough glasses.

Al I think I have for Fonseca off hand is '77 and '85... Dow could be fun too.
