New Douro budget red brought into the shop I haunt. No indication of blend.

Open about an hour, screwcap closure.

Solid red color, not insanely dark though.

Nose of sour cherries, raspberries and some green stems.

Palate shows a medium-light body, fresh tart cherries with some grippy tannins and raspberry and a bit of baby spinach and forest floor to give some accent other than tarter fruit. A very enjoyable, quaffable, affordable red.

I have fond memories of a Charamba wine from a visit to the Barossa Vally of all places. Many years ago on a long drive around of Australian wine regions we were camping in the Penola campground. One evening we visited a local wine store/tavern that had a big selection of wines in their basement. After months of Australian Cabernets and Shiraz we were thrilled to find an old bottle of Charamba, an odd find right in the heart of Coonawarra. It was an older bottle, over ten years old at the time, but full of chartacter and interest and so very different from everything we had been drinking during the past few months. I haven't had one since but might just keep it in mind to try one.

Mahmoud.
