Bulas 20 Year Old Tawny Port

Light rim with an amber centre. Very transparent for a 20 year old tawny port.

Very underplayed on the nose with some light candied orange peel and brown syrup. On the palate it has a nice round mouth feel with a medium body. A shed of alcohol present, but it does not linger long.

Predominant flavour is sultan raisins accompanied by a touch of marzipan. The after taste is fairly long with a bit of spice, curry leaf I believe. This port is well structured and has a very good balance between sweetness and acidity and it is very enjoyable.

92 points.

Working on a 2016 bottling I picked up in Portugal in September.

Very thick and rich. Extremely unusual herbal aromas and flavors. Reminds me of an Italian bitter / aperitif. Also has earthy/musty notes I associate with bourbon that's been sitting unopened for 20-30 years.

Quite different and flavorful, not sure if I'm a fan though. I wonder if this is a representative bottle.

Anyone else pick up significant herbal/earthy notes from Bulas tawny's?

Is this part of their house style, or did I get a compromised bottle and should try again?

Hi Mike.

It does not sound very representative of the Bulas house style which is very mild, creamy, honey sweet. It is always a crowd pleaser especially with people new to port.

Your descriptors of herbs, earthy, musty is not normal for this house. I should know as I have tasted their entire portfolio many times as the Danish import of this brand is a close friend of mine. Sorry you got a bad bottle. I hope you will get a chance to try it again it is a really great tawny house and not too shabby with the reds neither.

Thank you Thomas, that's very helpful. I've heard great things about their tawnies. I will definitely pick up another bottle.
