Fonseca Lodge

Post by Roy Hersh »

The old lodge where Fonseca used to have their stocks of wine is no longer there. That amazing open pit in the cellar that was one of the coolest parts and their stocks of old and large format bottles will not been seen again in that venue. :(

The one occasion I visited that room, I was struck by how warm it was - maybe that's the reason for the move..

Yes, it was the lodge where the landslide took out some of the Port storage area. Thankfully there wasn't that much in the warehouse portion at the time and most of it was lesser priced Ports that were destroyed.

They moved out of it quite some time ago, I thought they moved out a couple years ago (??). Just too hard a location to use with trucks and all the congestion in Gaia now.

Roy didn't do a good job of saying if it was actually torn down or just empty. When I was there in September 2016 the building was still there. IIRC, that wall in the cellar was a Roman Wall and under UNESCO it has to be protected. Hence why TFP had to save it and redesign the cellar when it was discovered after the landslide. So I'd be surprised if it was actually torn down, unless they protected it.

Here are some pics. The hillside after the landslide and repair job (white retaining wall) and the actual Roman wall in the cellar.

Thanks for sharing this, Roy. I feel suddenly like a total outsider - but I didn't even know that there was a Fonseca Lodge at some point of time in the last years in Gaia... I only know the Quinta do Panascal... Now I feel sad that I will never see it as it obviously doesn't exist anymore... :(
