1987 Souza Vintage Port

Post by Glenn E. »

From the recent buying opportunity. Opened for the 1st meeting of the Sammamish Port Club.

1987 Souza VP

Color: Slightly cloudy, magenta and brick colors, clean rim. Looks kind of strawberry-esque.

Nose: Plum, strawberry jam, black pepper.

Palate: Faintly bitter but in a good way - it gives it a firm edge. Great flavor but not super rich. Very pleasant. Lots of strawberry, some very soft and sweet raspberry, and something like fruit leather. Not quite at its peak but very close. What I'd call a "drinking Port" because it's something you'd enjoy having a glass at hand to drink no matter what else you're doing (surfing the internet, watching TV, etc.).

Score: 91 points. Of the 3 VPs at the tasting, this was my choice to drink now. (The question was posed as: if there was 1/3 of each of these bottles left after the tasting, which would you take home to drink tomorrow?) It is in a very satisfying place; easy to drink, nice to look at, and a good finish.
