Fun Afternoon in Porto

I went to the Palacio da Bolsa this afternoon and met with Rui Cunha. He is responsible for producing wines in nearly every region in this country. Nowadays though, he just focuses on Douro, TrĂ¡s-os-Montes and Vinho Verde. He still is in charge of the Covela project that he started long ago, but now is making 14 wines on his own that are pretty excellent, based out of Favaios. Of course as that area specializes in Moscatel, he does a dry version as well as two stickies which are pretty great. His lineup of value whites is killer for the pricing and his reds at all levels are compelling. A very nice and laid back afternoon.

This piqued my curiosity, so I found his website: http://www.covela.pt/en/client/skins/home.php

There's a 100% Avesso wine from VV. I tried an Avesso once. Had a gin profile of sorts, pretty interesting. Looks like not much distribution for the Covela wines stateside, according to wine-searcher, anyway.

IIRC, the Favaios moscatel differs from Setubal moscatel in that it uses a different muscat grape. I believe they use the blanc a petit grains and Setubal uses muscat of Alexandria.
