S. Leonardo 40-yr Old Tawny Port
bottled 2011
Color: Medium tawny with a lot of orange. Light for a 40-yr old, but does show some age. It just looks "young" for 40.
Nose: Smooth and creamy. Something similar to confectioner's sugar, but more rich. Soft candied apricots and candied lemon peel.
Palate: Smooth and creamy like the nose. Full bodied, rich, and very sweet. But along with the sweetness comes well-balanced acidity. This particular bottle might need just a slight touch more acidity, but it's hardly even worth noting. Light vanilla and candied citrus. Very easy to drink for a 40-year old, it just begs you to take another sip.
Score: 95 points. The tawny Ports from Quinta do Mourao are pretty much everything I want in a tawny. Fantastic balance. This is an outstanding Port, and at this time the best 40-year old available for my taste. (Quinta da Romaneira no longer makes theirs. )
